GUNMAN KILLS NIGERIAN PASSENGER AT CANADA BUS TERMINAL
A 46-year-old Nigerian man, Osemwengie Irorere, was shot and killed inside a bus at the Yorkdale GO Bus Terminal in Toronto, Canada, last Sunday evening, authorities have confirmed.
According to the Toronto Police Service, the incident occurred around 7 p.m. on January 4, 2026, when Irorere and a 40-year-old suspect, identified as Tyrel Gibson, boarded the same GO bus. While on board, Gibson allegedly shot Irorere before fleeing the scene on foot. Responding officers arrived shortly after and found Irorere suffering from a gunshot wound. Life-saving efforts were made at the scene, but he was pronounced dead.
Police confirmed that Gibson was arrested a short time later, and a firearm was recovered. He has since been charged with first-degree murder and was scheduled to appear in court at the Toronto Regional Bail Centre on January 5, 2026.
“This is a tragic incident, and our officers are working diligently to ensure justice is served,” a statement from the Toronto Police Service read.
The killing of Irorere comes just weeks after another Nigerian, John Onetufo, was stabbed to death in London’s Lewisham area on New Year’s Eve. Onetufo was found with multiple stab wounds, and despite paramedics’ attempts to save him, he was pronounced dead at the scene. One suspect in that case has been charged and is facing court proceedings in the United Kingdom.
The back-to-back violent incidents involving Nigerian nationals abroad have raised concerns about the safety of the diaspora community, prompting calls for heightened vigilance and community support. Authorities in both countries have urged witnesses or anyone with information related to the Toronto shooting to come forward to aid the investigation.
