Tragedy struck the Olegabulu community in Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State after gunmen killed five people, including a traditional ruler, his wife, son, and two others.

The deadly attack happened on Thursday night when the assailants reportedly stormed the community around 8 pm.

According to local sources, four armed men arrived on two motorcycles before heading straight to the residence of the traditional ruler.

Residents said the attackers first exchanged greetings with people nearby in the local dialect, making many believe they were familiar faces and not a threat.

Moments later, they entered the monarch’s residence and opened fire, causing panic as residents ran for safety.

The attackers allegedly killed the traditional ruler and two members of his family inside the house.

After leaving the residence, they reportedly moved to a nearby house where they shot and killed two more people.

One other person was said to have sustained injuries during the incident.

Sources in the area said the attackers operated for about 20 minutes before fleeing the community.

The Chairman of Agatu Local Government Area, Melvin Ejeh, confirmed the attack on Friday.

He stated that five people lost their lives while one person was injured.

Ejeh also disclosed that police officers had visited the scene following the incident.

When contacted, the Benue State Police Command said it had yet to receive the official report at the time.

The latest attack has raised fresh concerns over security in parts of Benue State, where communities have continued to face violent incidents.

Residents are calling for swift investigations and a stronger security presence to prevent further attacks.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
