Public health experts, epidemiologists, researchers, policymakers, and development partners have called for improved disease surveillance systems across Nigeria to strengthen the country’s capacity to detect and respond to public health threats.

The call was made at the 12th Annual National Conference of the Epidemiological Society of Nigeria held in Calabar, Cross River State, with the theme “Strengthening Epidemiological Resilience in Nigeria: Addressing Emerging and Re-emerging Health Challenges.”

National President of the Epidemiological Society of Nigeria, Dr Matthew Ashikeni, said stronger surveillance systems are essential for early detection and rapid response to disease outbreaks.

He stressed that timely intervention remains critical in preventing the spread of infectious diseases.

“I am very pleased to welcome all of you… We are discussing how to strengthen epidemiological resilience in Nigeria in view of recurring disease outbreaks,” he said.

According to him, effective disease control requires robust surveillance mechanisms, improved sanitation, continuous training of health workers, and evidence-based policy implementation.

He also highlighted the importance of research institutions in providing data to guide public health decisions.

Cross River State Commissioner for Health, Dr Henry Ayuk, who represented Governor Bassey Otu, said the state has prioritised healthcare through investments in disease surveillance, primary healthcare, immunisation, and health infrastructure.

He noted that Cross River has strengthened outreach to hard-to-reach communities to ensure access to essential healthcare services.

Also speaking, the Director-General of the Cross River State Primary Healthcare Development Agency, Dr Vivian Otu, said health systems must remain resilient and responsive to outbreaks and emergencies.

She added that the state continues to improve its surveillance and disease response systems through routine monitoring and rapid investigation mechanisms.

Representing the World Health Organisation, Dr Rebecca Olatunde urged health professionals to sustain advocacy for stronger surveillance systems to better address emerging and re-emerging health threats.

Experts at the conference agreed that strengthening epidemiological resilience is key to improving Nigeria’s preparedness for future public health emergencies.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
