Daniella Abolarin graduated from Landmark University with an impressive 4.57 CGPA in Electrical and Electronics Engineering, rising from a 2:2 in her first year. She spoke about the challenges, discipline, and persistence that shaped her journey, as well as her plans in engineering, AI, and entrepreneurship.

Childhood Memories
“I grew up in Lagos with my siblings Dominion, David, and Delight. Though originally from Kwara State, my childhood was full of laughter, learning, and curiosity. From an early age, I was encouraged to read, ask questions, and explore the world. I loved solving puzzles, experimenting, and figuring out how things worked. Growing up in a home where learning was celebrated instilled in me a love for education and laid the foundation for my passion for problem-solving and engineering.”

Family Background
“I come from a Christian family. Both my parents are pastors and successful realtors. Their guidance instilled values of integrity, honesty, and humility. They demonstrated how to balance work, personal growth, and family responsibilities, teaching me that excellence is a lifestyle, not just a goal. The nurturing environment at home prepared me for both academic and personal challenges.”

Early Dreams
“My career aspirations evolved as I grew. Initially, I wanted to be a banker, inspired by my mother’s professionalism. Later, I dreamt of becoming a doctor, fascinated by the idea of helping people. My interest in engineering emerged in secondary school after learning about Bill Gates and participating in STEM projects, including coding and robotics at my church. I was drawn to Electrical Engineering because of its broad opportunities, particularly in software engineering, and because it presented a challenge as a field with relatively few women.”

Influences on Discipline and Ambition
“Several people shaped my discipline and ambition. My grandmother instilled the habit of early morning study. My mother balanced work and family gracefully, showing that excellence across multiple areas is possible. My father, a perfectionist, emphasized meticulousness and attention to detail. Their combined influence shaped my ambition, work ethic, and sense of responsibility.”

University Journey
“I gained admission into Landmark University in late 2020, just after turning 15. Being younger than most peers was both exciting and intimidating. My siblings Dominion and David made the transition easier, but adjusting to the academic rigor and independence was challenging. I learned to manage both social and academic life effectively.”

Choosing Electrical and Electronics Engineering
“The field fascinated me because of how devices interact and function. I loved physics and problem-solving, and Electrical Engineering provided broad career opportunities while allowing me to explore software engineering alongside traditional concepts. It combined analytical thinking with creativity, which suited my interests perfectly.”

Coping with Workload
“My first year was particularly tough, finishing with a 2:2 GPA. I leaned on faith, consistency, and disciplined study habits, often reviewing notes with my twin and spending long hours in the library. By using visualization techniques to grasp complex concepts and maintaining spiritual grounding, I gradually improved my results.”

Study Approach and Habits
“I always sat at the front in lectures, reviewed notes thoroughly, and studied collaboratively when needed. I reduced screen time, sacrificed late nights and social events, and used church service to stay disciplined. The combination of consistency, strategic study, and faith became the backbone of my academic success.”

Overcoming Challenges
“During my 300-level Omega semester, I faced a heavy workload alongside makeup exams. A course error initially affected my GPA, but perseverance, planning, and faith helped me improve dramatically. Difficult courses like AutoCAD and electronics required extra effort, late-night practice, mentorship, and support from peers and lecturers. These experiences taught me resilience and determination.”

Balancing Life and Academics
“I balanced friendships, personal growth, social life, and academics by setting priorities and boundaries. Selective socialising, consistent focus on studies, and engagement in church helped me manage responsibilities without compromising my goals or values.”

Mentorship and Guidance
“Several lecturers and mentors were pivotal. A Business Administration lecturer, Danjuma, guided me in strategic planning and grade improvement. Dr. Igbekele, Engr Dotun, my supervisor Engr Onimisi, and others provided mentorship and encouragement, helping me stay disciplined and motivated.”

Faith and Values
“Faith was the anchor of my journey. Scriptures like Psalm 119:99 and 1 John 2:20 strengthened my understanding and confidence. Discipline, consistency, resilience, and community values kept me grounded and shaped my decisions.”

Hidden Struggles
“People rarely see the long nights, tears, moments of self-doubt, and intense effort behind the scenes. These unseen struggles shaped my determination and were essential to my success.”

Graduation and Achievements
“Seeing my final result was overwhelming. Graduating with a 4.57 CGPA validated years of hard work and sacrifice. My twin brother, David, also graduated with a First Class, ranking among the top three with a 4.92 CGPA. Graduating on October 31, 2025, was deeply fulfilling for our family.”

Life After Graduation
“Transitioning into the real world has been a period of growth and intentional development. I have strengthened my technical skills in Python, software testing, digital marketing, and AI. These experiences have broadened my understanding of engineering and reinforced my confidence in pursuing tech-driven career paths.”

Current Focus and Ambitions
“I am exploring engineering opportunities while developing complementary skills in content strategy, social media management, and entrepreneurship. My goal is to launch a start-up that merges engineering knowledge, AI, and business insight to create impactful, scalable solutions.”

Advice for Students
“Stay focused on your ‘why,’ be consistent, seek mentorship, and view challenges as growth opportunities. Success is a journey, not a destination.”

Message to Young Girls in STEM
“Be confident, bold, and determined. Women are excelling in STEM every day, and you are equally capable. Embrace challenges, take risks, and never underestimate your potential.”

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
