“I FOUND OUT MY HUSBAND WAS A CULTIST AND DRUG ADDICT JUST ONE MONTH AFTER OUR WEDDING” — WOMAN TELLS COURT
A Grade A Customary Court sitting in Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State, has officially dissolved a 10-year-old marriage between Adebimpe and her husband, Olusoji, over claims of deceit, drug addiction, domestic abuse, and neglect.
Adebimpe had approached the court seeking an end to their union, citing her husband’s failure to care for her and their children, as well as physical violence and dishonesty from the onset of their relationship.
According to her, Olusoji misled her into believing he held a National Diploma when they met, only to confess shortly before their wedding that he had been expelled from school due to cult-related activities. Just a month after the wedding, she discovered he was also addicted to drugs.
She further alleged that Olusoji quit his job and became financially dependent on her. As time went on, she claimed he rarely contributed to the household and often neglected their children’s education and wellbeing. Confronting him over these issues, she said, often led to physical assault.
“At a point, he beat me so badly that I fainted,” Adebimpe told the court, adding that she had him arrested and detained by the police following one of such incidents.
The situation worsened when one of their daughters began complaining of vaginal pain after visiting her father at his new residence. This raised further concerns about the children’s safety.
Adebimpe also revealed that her husband had destroyed their wedding photos and video, spat on her, and threatened to assault her if she refused to let him take the children.
As part of her petition, she asked the court to dissolve the marriage, grant her full custody of the children, and issue a restraining order to prevent Olusoji from threatening or interfering with her life.
Despite being served multiple summonses, Olusoji failed to appear in court to defend himself.
Presiding over the case, Court President Mrs. O.E. Owoseni confirmed that the couple had been legally married and ruled that the plaintiff’s unchallenged testimony justified the dissolution of the marriage.
The court granted Adebimpe custody of the children and issued an order restraining Olusoji from harassing or interfering in her private life.
