I RAN MY CAMPAIGN ON CAPACITY, NOT GENDER — NBA PRESIDENT-ELECT

The President-elect of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Mr. Chukwudi Okafor, has said his campaign was based on capacity and competence rather than gender considerations.

Okafor made the remark on Friday while addressing the media after his victory at the NBA elections. He emphasised that his election represents the choice of the majority of lawyers who believed in his vision for the association.

“I ran my campaign on capacity, not gender. The Nigerian Bar Association is a professional body, and the focus should be on competence, integrity, and the ability to lead effectively,” Okafor stated.

The president-elect pledged to work towards the unity of the bar, the welfare of lawyers, and the promotion of the rule of law. He said his administration will prioritise the protection of the rights of legal practitioners and the improvement of the justice delivery system in the country.

Okafor also called for greater collaboration between the bar and the bench to address the challenges facing the legal profession. He promised to engage with the government on issues affecting the judiciary and the legal system.

The election of Mr. Okafor has been described as a victory for merit and professionalism. Many lawyers have congratulated him and expressed confidence in his ability to lead the NBA effectively.

The outgoing NBA President, Mr. Yakubu Maikyau, commended the peaceful conduct of the election and urged all members to support the new leadership for the progress of the association.

The Nigerian Bar Association remains one of the most influential professional bodies in the country, playing a key role in the promotion of justice, human rights, and the rule of law. The new president is expected to assume office in the coming weeks and begin implementing his agenda for the bar.
