“I THOUGHT ‘DOROBUCCI’ WAS A CRAP SONG” – TIWA SAVAGE OPENS UP ON HER FIRST REACTION TO MAVIN HIT
Afrobeats queen Tiwa Savage has made a surprising revelation about one of Mavin Records’ biggest hits, “Dorobucci,” admitting that she initially thought the song was terrible.
Speaking during an interview with NotJustOk, the singer shared that Mavin boss Don Jazzy first played the early version of Dorobucci in a hotel in Dubai during her wedding, and she was unimpressed.
“Don’t know if people know this, but Don Jazzy played ‘Dorobucci’ in the hotel when we were in Dubai for my wedding, and honestly, I thought it was such a crap song,” Tiwa confessed.
However, her opinion took a dramatic turn when she returned to Nigeria and heard the finished version in the studio.
“When I got back to Nigeria and I heard the full version, I was flabbergasted. I was so angry because this had happened with Eminado too — I didn’t like it at first,” she recalled.
Tiwa went on to reveal that she was the last Mavin artist to record her verse on Dorobucci, admitting that she was hesitant to join even as her labelmates — including Reekado Banks, Korede Bello, D’ija, Dr Sid, and Don Jazzy — were excited about the track.
“I was the last person to record my verse because I was looking at everybody like, ‘Do you guys really like this?’” she said.
Despite her initial doubts, Dorobucci went on to become a massive continental hit, cementing Mavin Records’ dominance in the Afrobeats scene and becoming one of the defining anthems of the 2010s.
Reflecting on the success, Tiwa praised Don Jazzy’s unmatched creativity and vision:
“We all know what happened to the record. I don’t know what Don Jazzy does, but yeah, it turned out to be phenomenal. Shoutout to Don Jazzy.”
