“I THOUGHT I WAS GOING TO DIE BROKE” – SPYRO OPENS UP ON HIS FEAR OF FAILURE AND CHILDHOOD STRUGGLES
Nigerian singer Oludipe David, popularly known as Spyro, has shared a deeply emotional story about his early struggles, fear of failure, and how negative words from his father once made him believe he would never succeed.
In a heartfelt chat with media veteran Frank Edoho, the “Who Is Your Guy” crooner revealed that his father’s constant harsh criticisms during his childhood left a lasting impact on his confidence and mindset.
“I thought I was going to die broke. I always had this fear of failure. And my dad contributed to that. He took every opportunity he got to always tell me that I am a failure,” Spyro recalled.
The singer admitted that the emotional toll affected his academic life — he performed poorly in secondary school and even doubted his ability to complete his university degree.
He explained that he lived for years believing he was destined to fail, a mindset rooted in what psychologists call atychiphobia — the fear of failure.
However, Spyro said he found healing and confidence through his faith.
“I overcame that fear when I built a personal relationship with God. That changed everything for me,” he said.
Before his breakthrough in 2022, Spyro revealed that he had considered giving up on music entirely and had started a career in interior design.
His fortunes changed when “Who Is Your Guy” went viral, eventually earning him a Headies Award for Best Collaboration (2023) following a remix with Tiwa Savage.
Now one of Afrobeats’ most celebrated voices, Spyro says his story is proof that faith and perseverance can rewrite any narrative.
“God gave me a second chance. I went from thinking I’d die broke to living my dreams,” he concluded.
