Nigerian singer Skales has opened up about his difficult childhood, revealing that he once lived in a hut with his late mother in Kaduna.

The music star, who shared his story during a recent appearance on A TownHall Different Podcast, described his journey from poverty to fame as “crazy.”

“I’ve been through a lot. I come from Kaduna from a poor family. My mum was a teacher. I used to live in a hut before we moved to a BQ. We used to sleep on the floor with mats, and my mom would put a wrapper on the floor,” he recounted.

Skales, whose real name is Raoul John Njeng-Njeng, explained that his upbringing was so modest that he never had the privilege of watching television until after he secured his first record deal.

“Coming from that situation to becoming who I am right now is crazy, man. Sometimes I just look at it and I’m like, that’s crazy. I never saw TV. The first time I saw TV was when EME signed me. To even have my own TV in my room was unbelievable,” he said.

Skales, who rose to prominence after joining Empire Mates Entertainment (EME) alongside artists like Wizkid and Banky W, said his story is a reminder of how far he has come against the odds.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
