The Acting Inspector General of the Nigeria Police Force, Tunji Disu, has ordered an immediate nationwide audit of arms and ammunition across all police commands following a controversial killing in Delta State.

The directive comes after a viral video showed officers shooting a restrained suspect at close range, sparking public outrage and raising concerns over the misuse of firearms by security personnel.

Addressing senior officers in Abuja, Disu said the audit would ensure accountability, identify gaps, and improve the management of operational weapons across the force.

He emphasised that the exercise must be thorough and transparent, with detailed reports submitted to the Force Headquarters within a specified timeframe.

Describing the incident as unlawful, the police chief confirmed that four officers involved, led by ASP Nuhu Usman, had been dismissed, with their case forwarded for prosecution.

“This matter will not be swept aside. Accountability will be pursued to its full conclusion,” he stated.

Beyond the audit, Disu also announced broader reforms, including the creation of a new Violent Crime Response Unit to replace the Special Weapons and Tactics teams, with a stronger focus on human rights and intelligence-driven operations.

He further directed Commissioners of Police to strengthen community engagement by holding regular town hall meetings and making themselves more accessible to the public.

The move is seen as part of efforts to rebuild public trust and improve professionalism within the police force amid rising concerns over misconduct and accountability.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
