Afrobeats icon Davido recently sparked online discussions after declaring, “I am Igbo by blood,” in response to criticism over his association with individuals of Igbo descent.

This statement drew attention to his paternal grandmother, the late Dr. Nnenna Esther Adeleke, widely recognized as a key link to his Igbo roots.

Dr. Adeleke, who passed away in 2011, hailed from Akwete in Ukwa East Local Government Area of Abia State. She was the mother of Dr. Adedeji Adeleke (Davido’s father), Governor Ademola Adeleke (B-Red’s father), and the late Senator Isiaka Adeleke.

Her influence and cultural legacy remain deeply embedded in the Adeleke family, which spans both Yoruba and Igbo communities. Interestingly, Governor Adeleke once revealed that he and his siblings speak Igbo more fluently than Yoruba, a reflection of their maternal heritage.

A resurfaced quote from Davido adds a personal and emotional layer to his connection:

“I was 10 years old when my late mother told me this: ‘David Obim, you will achieve great things but will grow greater if you keep in touch with my people. They will teach you how not to depend on your father’s wealth but also grow your own.’”

“When I say ‘I am Igbo,’ it goes beyond just words—it’s spiritual. When I’m around Igbo people, I feel joy, love, and I learn how to create wealth. I love you, mummy.”

Veteran entertainer Charly Boy publicly supported Davido’s declaration, commending him for standing firm in his identity and embracing his roots despite the backlash.
