IGP DISU PROPOSES 200% GRATUITY, PENSION FOR RETIRED OFFICERS
Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu has proposed an enhanced gratuity and pension package for retired officers as part of efforts to address longstanding retirement concerns within the force.
Speaking to journalists in Abuja on Sunday, Disu said the proposal, described as a 200 per cent gratuity and pension package, was before a presidential committee for consideration.
The report did not explain the calculation behind the percentage or specify its baseline.
Under the proposed arrangement, eligible officers would receive pension benefits linked to their last salaries, alongside an improved gratuity.
Disu said the reforms would also consider existing retirees, with provisions to review their benefits rather than restrict improvements to officers retiring under a future framework.
The committee includes representatives from the Ministry of Finance, the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation, the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, the Budget Office and the National Pension Commission.
According to the police chief, the initiative aims to resolve outstanding liabilities, improve retirement income and make pension administration more efficient.
He said it would also address concerns behind demands for police personnel to leave the Contributory Pension Scheme.
Disu noted that delayed payments and inadequate benefits had placed pressure on retirees struggling with household expenses and medical bills.
The package remains a proposal undergoing review, and no implementation date was announced.
