The chairman of Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area, Aniefiok Nkom, has called for unity and collective action to preserve the legacy of the council’s founding fathers as it marks its 75th anniversary.

Speaking during a world press conference in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State, Nkom said unity of purpose among stakeholders would be key to sustaining the achievements of the council and shaping its future direction.

The event also marked the unveiling of activities for the council’s diamond jubilee celebration themed “Celebrating Heritage, Inspiring the Future, Making the First, the Best.”

Nkom described the milestone as more than just a celebration, stating that Ikot Ekpene at 75 represents a rebirth rather than a birthday celebration.

He said the council, established in 1951 as the first experimental local government in Nigeria and British West Africa, has remained a pioneer in governance, culture, and community development.

According to him, the anniversary is meant to inspire renewed leadership, innovation, and long-term development rather than ceremonial gatherings alone.

He explained that the jubilee will include a series of activities running from April to December 2026, including cultural events, economic programmes, and infrastructure projects.

One of the major highlights will be the planned coronation of the Paramount Ruler of Ikot Ekpene, which he described as a significant step in restoring traditional authority and cultural identity.

The celebration will also feature the commissioning of a modern shopping mall and exhibitions showcasing the area’s renowned raffia products and creative industries.

Nkom emphasized that the council is opening its doors to investors, urging them to take advantage of opportunities in agriculture, commerce, and the creative sector.

He also called on indigenes in the diaspora to reconnect with their roots and contribute to the development of the area.

The council boss further urged traditional rulers to uphold their roles as custodians of culture while calling on the media to help project a positive image of Ikot Ekpene.

He concluded by stressing that the jubilee is focused on building a stronger, more united, and forward-looking community for future generations.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
