Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has spoken out against accusations of being two-faced in his political dealings, especially regarding his decision not to support Atiku Abubakar in the 2023 presidential election.

During a media chat in Abuja on Monday, Wike clarified that his position was never hidden—he openly rejected supporting the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate and chose instead to align with President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

“I take exception to people saying I’m double-faced,” Wike stated. “From day one, I made it clear I wouldn’t support Atiku. I didn’t attend their meetings and go behind to do something else. I stood for equity, fairness, and justice.”

Wike, a PDP member and former governor of Rivers State, emphasized that his stance was rooted in the belief that the South deserved the presidency in 2023. He argued that supporting a southern candidate with the capacity to win and lead effectively was his guiding principle.

“I had to make a decision based on who, in my view, had the best chance to win and change Nigeria’s direction. That person was Tinubu,” he said.

Wike's bold decision to support a rival party’s candidate stirred controversy, especially among his PDP colleagues. But he insists his actions were transparent and consistent with his convictions—not political betrayal.

“If I had campaigned for Atiku and later switched sides, that would have been double-faced. But I was open from the start,” he added.

His comments shed more light on the ongoing rift within the PDP and his continued cooperation with President Tinubu’s administration—an alliance that still draws both criticism and praise from different quarters of the political space.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
