I’M NOT LEAVING PDP FOR APC – GOV MUTFWANG BREAKS SILENCE ON DEFECTION RUMOURS
Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State has debunked claims suggesting he plans to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), calling such reports baseless and misleading.
During a recent media chat, Mutfwang dismissed the speculation, emphasizing that no conversation regarding leaving the PDP had taken place.
“I’ve never discussed defecting to the APC with anyone,” he stated. “The media has been speculating, but there’s no truth to it.”
The rumour surfaced amid a wave of defections by PDP governors in other states, such as Delta and Akwa Ibom. However, Mutfwang maintained that Plateau State remains firmly aligned with the PDP.
“Plateau has always supported the PDP. The APC has never had a strong presence here, and I say that with full confidence,” he noted.
He attributed the rumours to certain individuals pushing personal agendas, some of whom he said may be well-intentioned but misinformed.
Reflecting on past elections, Mutfwang accused the APC of manipulating results to gain power in the state.
“In 2015, vote collation was paused at 8 p.m. and scheduled to continue the next day. But by 2 a.m., results had already been declared. That speaks volumes,” he recounted.
He also argued that PDP’s 2019 candidate, General Jeremiah Usaini, was the rightful winner but was denied victory by the system.
Mutfwang criticized APC leaders in Plateau, alleging they lack public trust and often seek legitimacy by associating with the PDP.
“Some APC figures are hoping our credibility will rub off on them. But that’s not how politics works in Plateau,” he said.
He reiterated his commitment to the PDP and stated that his political future would be guided by divine will and the wishes of Plateau residents.
“My future in politics lies in God’s hands and with the people of Plateau State. I’ll go where they go,” he declared.
On the internal challenges within the PDP, particularly the loss of some legislative seats through court rulings, Mutfwang acknowledged the setbacks but expressed hope. As a member of the party’s national reconciliation committee, he said efforts to resolve the crisis are yielding results.
“I’m a committed PDP member and will continue to be one. I believe the issues in the party will soon be resolved,” he assured.
