The Imo State Government has issued a strict warning to nightclub owners and hoteliers, ordering them to stop the sale and consumption of hard drugs on their premises or face severe consequences.

The announcement was made in a statement by Chief Ezechukwu Obonna, the Special Adviser to Governor Hope Uzodimma on Narcotics and Illicit Drugs Monitoring, in Owerri on Saturday.

Hard Drugs Rampant in Public Spaces

Obonna raised concerns over the growing open sale and use of hard drugs, especially cannabis ('loud'), in lounges and nightclubs across the state.

"The state government has observed that hard drugs are now being freely sold and consumed in public places as if they are no longer prohibited by law," he stated.

Strict Measures Against Violators

The Imo Government has declared that any business found enabling or permitting drug use will face severe penalties.

“The government will no longer tolerate the use of private businesses as havens for illicit drug use," Obonna warned.

He urged nightclub and lounge owners to take responsibility for ensuring their establishments are not used for illegal activities and to report suspicious behavior to authorities.

A Push for a Safer Society

The International Narcotics Control Board has also raised alarms about the rising drug use in Nigeria, prompting Imo’s government to take proactive steps toward creating a safer, drug-free environment.

“Together, we can create a safer, more responsible tourism and entertainment industry in Imo,” Obonna added.

The crackdown signals a tough stance on illicit drug activities, with authorities set to enforce strict monitoring and compliance measures in the coming weeks.
