The Imo State Independent Electoral Commission has postponed the local government election scheduled for November 7, 2026, without announcing a replacement date.

ISIEC Chairman Chief Charles Ejiogu disclosed the decision at a stakeholders’ meeting in Owerri on Saturday.

He did not give a specific reason for the latest postponement but said it followed consultations.

“The Imo State Independent Electoral Commission is constrained to announce that the scheduled Saturday, November 7, 2026, Local Government Council Elections will no longer hold,” he said.

The election had previously been scheduled for September 26 before being delayed over litigation, according to the state government.

Ejiogu assured political parties and candidates that a new date, timetable and guidelines would be announced as soon as possible.

He maintained that the commission remained committed to conducting peaceful, transparent and credible elections for council chairmen and councillors.

The chairman also promised equal opportunities for participating parties and urged stakeholders to remain tolerant.

On security, he said the commission was working with relevant agencies to establish an Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security to coordinate protection before, during and after the polls.

He further called on political parties to sign and respect a peace accord, warning against attempts to undermine voters’ choices.

Ejiogu said the meeting provided an opportunity to hear stakeholders’ concerns and suggestions as preparations continued.
