The second-semester undergraduate examinations at Lagos State University (LASU), scheduled to commence on Monday, August 4, are now in jeopardy due to an indefinite strike by university workers.

The strike, which began on Thursday, July 31, has brought academic and administrative operations at the university to a halt.

As of Friday, sources revealed that unless a major breakthrough occurs over the weekend leading to a suspension of the strike, the planned examinations may be postponed.

Staff members across LASU and its satellite campuses—LASUCOM and the Epe Campus—have collectively stopped work in protest over poor welfare conditions and unresolved grievances with the university management.

In a formal letter dated July 31, 2025, addressed to the Vice Chancellor, Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, the leadership of the university’s four staff unions declared that the strike would continue until their demands are fully addressed.

The unions, under the umbrella of the Joint Action Committee—which includes the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), and National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT)—stated that the decision to embark on the indefinite industrial action was taken during an emergency congress.

The letter, jointly signed by Prof. Ibrahim Bakare (Chairman, ASUU-LASU), Sylvester Idowu (Secretary, ASUU-LASU), Oluwaseyi Lawal (Chairman, SSANU-LASU), and Waheed Majekodunmi (Secretary, SSANU-LASU), was titled “Notice of Indefinite Strike Action.”

It reads in part:
“Following the resolution reached at the Emergency Congress of the Joint Action Committee of LASU Staff Unions (ASUU-LASU, SSANU-LASU, NAAT-LASU & NASU-LASU), we hereby notify you that an indefinite strike has commenced effective Thursday, July 31, 2025. The action will remain in effect until all staff demands are met by the appropriate authorities.

“As a result, all staff members at LASU and its affiliated campuses (LASUCOM and Epe) are instructed to withdraw their services and vacate their official duty posts immediately. While we appreciate your continued support, please accept the unions’ highest regards.”
