Electoral commission sets up strategic operational body comprising transport unions, security agencies, and maritime authorities to eliminate material distribution delays and ensure seamless nationwide polls

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has formally inaugurated a multi-agency Electoral Logistics Committee at its headquarters in Abuja, marking the commencement of early operational preparations for the 2027 general elections.

The newly constituted committee brings together key stakeholders, including leadership from major transport bodies such as the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN), and civil aviation authorities.

Security and paramilitary institutions, comprising the Nigeria Police Force, Nigerian Air Force, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), are also heavily represented to ensure robust operational security and seamless movement of election materials.

Speaking during the inauguration ceremony, electoral leadership emphasized that the proactive framework aims to address recurring operational vulnerabilities identified in past electoral cycles, warning that early planning is vital to preventing delays in the arrival of voting materials at polling units nationwide.

The committee has been tasked with formulating a comprehensive strategic logistics framework, reviewing past deployment challenges, mapping out difficult riverine and remote terrains, and establishing rigid monitoring protocols to safeguard sensitive and non-sensitive electoral assets across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

INEC officials reaffirmed that eliminating supply chain bottlenecks and securing timely distribution remains essential to protecting voters' rights and upholding public trust in the integrity of upcoming democratic processes.
