INEC KICKS OFF VOTER REGISTRATION AHEAD OF ANAMBRA GOVERNORSHIP ELECTION
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has launched the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise across all 326 political wards in Anambra State in preparation for the upcoming governorship election scheduled for November 8.
The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in the state, Dr. Queen Elizabeth Agwu, announced that the ongoing registration will run until July 17.
However, she clarified that the current CVR process will not be applicable for the forthcoming by-elections in the Anambra South Senatorial District and Onitsha North I Constituency, which were necessitated by the demise of their former representatives. The second phase of the voter registration is scheduled to begin on August 16, following the by-elections, and will conclude on August 26.
Dr. Agwu emphasized that preparations for both the by-elections and the November 8 governorship poll have been finalized, with Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) devices already charged and tested.
"We are fully prepared for the elections. All necessary materials have been received. I appeal to residents to participate in the voter registration. Not registering or voting is a disservice to yourself, the state, and the country," she said.
She also disclosed that INEC has received 326 scanners from its national headquarters for the CVR exercise, which will be deployed alongside the configured BVAS devices. Additionally, she noted that training for ad-hoc staff is underway, and voter awareness campaigns have already been conducted by the commission.
