INEC SETS SEPTEMBER 19 FOR FRESH POLLS ACROSS FOUR STATES

The Independent National Electoral Commission has announced September 19, 2026, as the date for the conduct of bye-elections in four states across Nigeria. The electoral body said the polls would be held to fill vacant elective positions that became available following the departure or removal of the previous occupants.

INEC said the affected constituencies and states will participate in the elections as part of efforts to ensure that vacant seats are filled through democratic processes. The commission is expected to deploy its personnel and electoral materials to the affected areas while working with relevant stakeholders to ensure that the elections are conducted in line with established guidelines.

The announcement is expected to set the stage for political parties and their candidates to intensify preparations ahead of the polls. Parties contesting the various seats will have to mobilise supporters, campaign within the rules and ensure that their agents are adequately prepared for the election and collation processes.

INEC also reiterated the importance of eligible voters participating in the elections and complying with electoral regulations. The commission has continued to emphasise peaceful conduct by political parties, candidates and voters, while urging security agencies and other stakeholders to support a credible and orderly exercise.

The September 19 bye-elections will therefore provide an opportunity for voters in the affected constituencies to choose new representatives. INEC said necessary arrangements would be made to ensure that the polls are conducted transparently and in accordance with Nigeria’s electoral laws.
