INEC TO HOLD BYE-ELECTIONS FOR TWO RIVERS ASSEMBLY SEATS
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that bye-elections for the Ahoada East II and Khana II state constituencies in Rivers State are scheduled for February 21, 2026.
The commission made the announcement during its extraordinary meeting on Monday, where it also reviewed preparations for the Federal Capital Territory Area Council elections, which are set for the same date.
Under Section 116 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), INEC is empowered to conduct bye-elections to fill vacancies in state assemblies.
The Ahoada East II seat became vacant following the resignation of its former member, while the Khana II seat was left vacant due to the death of its representative. The Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly has formally notified INEC of both vacancies.
