INEC WARNS POLITICIANS: "2027 CAMPAIGNS ARE TOO EARLY AND ILLEGAL"
INEC Cautions Politicians Against Premature 2027 Campaign Activities
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has issued a firm warning to political parties and aspirants ahead of the 2027 general elections, saying it is too early to start campaigning.
This comes as posters, endorsements, and political declarations have already begun to surface across the country, raising eyebrows about whether campaigns are beginning unofficially.
In a statement reported by Punch, the Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, Rotimi Oyekanmi, made it clear that INEC has not released any official timetable or schedule for the 2027 elections.
“Party primaries have not been held and no political party has nominated any candidates,” he stated.
Oyekanmi further reminded all political actors about Section 94(1) of the Electoral Act 2022, which states that campaigns are only allowed to begin 150 days before the election and must end 24 hours before the polling day. He also highlighted Section 95(1), which mandates that all campaigns must follow INEC’s rules and regulations.
While he acknowledged that Nigerians have the right to political conversations and freedom of expression, he stressed that any
Public campaigning or vote-seeking at this time is illegal and goes against the law.
“Open campaigning or vote canvassing right now is not only inappropriate, but a violation of the Electoral Act,” he added.
He revealed that INEC had already raised concerns over the issue during a recent meeting with party officials and expects full compliance going forward.
This development serves as a reminder to politicians and supporters that Nigeria's electoral process has clear rules, and early campaigning could result in legal consequences or sanctions from the commission.
