As the world commemorates the 2025 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has emphasized the vital role of prevention in safeguarding lives and securing the future of young people.

Highlighting this year’s theme, “The evidence is clear: invest in prevention. Break the cycle. #StopOrganizedCrime,” Mrs Tinubu stressed the need for greater investment in preventive strategies to combat drug abuse and related crimes.

She urged leaders, parents, teachers, and community stakeholders to intensify their efforts in tackling the growing threat of drug misuse, describing it as a collective responsibility.

In her statement marking the occasion, the First Lady called for meaningful youth engagement and stronger family support systems to raise awareness and counter the spread of drug-related issues in society.

“The International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking reminds us to renew our dedication to protecting the health and future of our citizens, particularly our youth, from the dangers of drug abuse,” she said.

Mrs Tinubu further noted that every Nigerian child deserves to grow up in a safe and supportive environment, free from the influence of drugs and organized crime.

“It is our duty to actively engage our youth, empower families, and spread awareness. By working together, we can build a safer, healthier, and more resilient Nigeria,” she added.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
