IRAN WORLD CUP SQUAD SET TO REACH MEXICO ON SUNDAY
Iran’s national football team is expected to arrive in Mexico on Sunday as preparations intensify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
According to Iran Football Federation president Mehdi Taj, the squad will travel first to Spain before proceeding to Tijuana, Mexico, where the team will be based throughout the tournament. The journey comes amid ongoing visa processing for both Mexico and the United States.
Iran had originally planned to establish its World Cup base in Arizona, but FIFA approved a switch to Tijuana following security concerns and regional tensions. The team will stay in Mexico and commute to the United States for its Group G matches.
Coach Amir Ghalenoei's side will open its World Cup campaign against New Zealand in Los Angeles on June 15, before facing Belgium on June 21 and Egypt on June 26.
Iran's preparations have been affected by disruptions linked to the conflict involving the United States and Israel, with federation officials saying several planned warm-up matches were cancelled. Despite the challenges, Team Melli remains focused on making an impact at its seventh World Cup appearance.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup runs from June 11 to July 19 across the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
