ISAAC SCHMIDT NO LONGER ELIGIBLE FOR NIGERIA AFTER CHOOSING SWITZERLAND
Leeds United defender Isaac Schmidt is no longer eligible to represent the Super Eagles of Nigeria after committing his international future to Switzerland.
The Switzerland Football Association secured his allegiance following his appearance in their 3-0 victory over Slovenia in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier at St. Jakob Stadium on Monday.
The 25-year-old, born in Lausanne to a Swiss-German father and Nigerian mother, had been eligible to play for Nigeria and Germany before making his competitive debut for Switzerland.
Schmidt featured as a second-half substitute, replacing Silvan Widmer, in a move that officially tied him to the Swiss national team.
His decision mirrors that of players like Manuel Akanji and Noah Okafor, who also chose Switzerland despite being eligible to represent Nigeria.
Currently, Schmidt is on loan at German Bundesliga club Werder Bremen from Leeds United.
