IT WAS A TOKEN OF APPRECIATION.
A Chinese national, seen in a viral video giving cash to Nigerian police officers, has addressed the controversy surrounding the incident.
The video, which showed several officers receiving N5,000 each from a delegation led by the Chinese man, sparked outrage online, with critics accusing the officers of compromising their integrity. In response, the man, identified as the leader of the Chinese delegation, clarified that the money was given as a gesture of appreciation, not as a bribe.
“What you see in the video was a friendly and open interaction — nothing was done in secret and nothing inappropriate happened,” he said.
The Chinese man expressed regret over the unintended consequences of the video, stating, "We are sorry for how this unfolded. Despite this, we remain committed to Nigeria."
The Nigeria Police Force condemned the officers' actions and promised disciplinary action. In response, African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore criticized the officers, accusing them of being "reduced to nothing" by "greed and indiscipline."
He also clarified that the gesture was based on a cultural tradition from China, where showing appreciation to individuals performing their jobs well, especially when they’ve been helpful or respectful, is common. He emphasized, "It was simply a kind gesture, not a bribe or payoff."
