IT WOULD NOT HAPPEN IN OTHER TOURNAMENTS, SUPER FALCONS’ PLUMPTRE CRITICISES CAF

Super Falcons defender Ashleigh Plumptre has expressed strong dissatisfaction with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) following the postponement of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

In a video interview shared by BBC Match of the Day, the Al-Ittihad defender said such changes are uncommon in other football tournaments.

CAF recently announced that WAFCON, originally scheduled for March 17 to April 3, 2026, in Morocco, would now take place from July 25 to August 16, 2026. The decision came after discussions with global football authorities and other stakeholders, due to unexpected challenges in planning and organizing the tournament.

Plumptre criticized the timing of the postponement, stating, “It just wouldn’t happen for other tournaments in women’s football and especially in men’s football. Last WAFCON wasn’t less important than this one just because it wasn’t qualification for a World Cup.”

She emphasized that continental competitions should remain consistent, regardless of external pressures or larger objectives linked to them.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
