iXAfrica Data Centres and Baobab Cloud Services have officially launched a new Sovereign Public Cloud Platform in Kenya, marking a significant step toward greater digital sovereignty and data protection in East Africa.

The platform, named Baobab Sovereign Cloud, is designed to give Kenyan businesses, government institutions, and organisations secure, locally hosted cloud services that keep their data within the country’s borders. It combines iXAfrica’s world-class data centre infrastructure with Baobab’s advanced cloud technology.

Speaking at the launch event in Nairobi, officials from both companies said the new platform addresses growing concerns about data privacy, compliance, and reliance on foreign cloud providers. The service will offer secure data storage, computing power, disaster recovery, and artificial intelligence capabilities, all hosted in Kenya.

This development is expected to benefit key sectors such as banking, healthcare, education, and government, where data residency and security are critical. Local organisations will now have access to enterprise-grade cloud services without having to send sensitive data overseas.

Kenya has been pushing hard to become a digital hub in Africa. The launch of this sovereign cloud platform supports the government’s vision of building a secure and self-reliant digital economy. It also aligns with broader African efforts to gain greater control over national data and reduce dependence on foreign cloud giants.

iXAfrica operates one of the most advanced data centres in East Africa, while Baobab Cloud Services brings deep expertise in delivering flexible and scalable cloud solutions tailored for African markets.

The Baobab Sovereign Cloud is now available to businesses and institutions across Kenya. Both companies say they plan to expand the platform to other East African countries in the near future.

This partnership represents another milestone in Africa’s digital journey, giving local organisations better tools to innovate while keeping their data safe and secure within the continent.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
