JIGAWA AT 35: NAMADI HONOURS PAST LEADERS, CALLS FOR RENEWED COMMITMENT

Jigawa State has commemorated the 35th anniversary of its creation, with Governor Umar Namadi paying tribute to the founding fathers, former leaders, traditional rulers and citizens who have contributed to the state’s development over the years.

The anniversary, marked on Thursday, August 27, 2026, provided an opportunity for the state to reflect on its journey since its creation in 1991. Jigawa was carved out of the old Kano State by the Federal Military Government led by the then Head of State, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, with Dutse designated as the state capital.

In his anniversary message, Namadi expressed gratitude to God for His protection and guidance over the state and its people. He described the occasion as a time for thanksgiving, remembrance and reflection, while urging residents to renew their commitment to building a more prosperous Jigawa.

The governor recognised the contributions of individuals and groups involved in the creation and development of the state, including elder statesmen, community leaders, public servants, professionals, women and youth organisations, civil society groups and development partners.

Namadi also acknowledged the contributions of successive military administrators and civilian governors who have led Jigawa since its creation. Among those mentioned were the pioneer Military Administrator, Major-General Olayinka Sule; the first elected civilian governor, Ali Sa’ad Birnin-Kudu; Brigadier General Ibrahim Aliyu; Colonel Rasheed Alade Shekoni; Lieutenant Colonel Abubakar Zakariya Maimalari; Ibrahim Saminu Turaki; Sule Lamido; and Muhammad Badaru Abubakar.

The governor extended his appreciation to former deputy governors, legislators, judges, commissioners, heads of service, permanent secretaries, local government officials and other public servants whose activities have contributed to the administration and growth of the state.

Traditional rulers and community leaders across the emirates of Hadejia, Kazaure, Gumel, Ringim and Dutse were also recognised for their roles in preserving the state’s cultural heritage, maintaining peace and connecting communities with government.

Namadi noted that Jigawa’s progress over the past three and a half decades was not achieved by political leaders alone. He credited farmers, traders, teachers, health workers, artisans, entrepreneurs, scholars, religious leaders, security personnel and other residents for their contributions to the state’s development.

He said the best way to honour those who worked for the creation and advancement of Jigawa was to uphold peace, justice and equal opportunities while protecting public resources and investing in younger generations.

The governor urged residents to view the anniversary as a fresh opportunity to build on the achievements of the past while preparing for the future. He reiterated his administration’s commitment to sustainable development, improved socioeconomic conditions, peace and prosperity.

Namadi also appealed to the people to continue supporting his administration as it pursues its development agenda. He thanked citizens living in Jigawa and those in the diaspora for their contributions, while praying for the continued progress of the state and Nigeria.
