Jigawa State Governor, Umar Namadi, has approved the appointment of Dr Lawan Ahmed Muhammad Sani as the 17th Emir of Gumel Emirate, three days after the death of his father, the former emir.

The appointment was announced on Sunday by the Secretary to the Jigawa State Government, Bala Ibrahim, during a press briefing at the Nigeria Union of Journalists Secretariat in Dutse, the state capital.

Ibrahim said the appointment followed consultations with the Gumel Emirate Council and kingmakers and was made in accordance with the Jigawa State Emirate Council Law.

He explained that the appointment took immediate effect to fill the leadership vacuum created by the death of the former emir and ensure peace, unity and stability in the emirate.

The SSG described the new emir as a worthy successor, highlighting his previous service as the Ciroman Gumel during the reign of his late father.

According to Ibrahim, Lawan’s experience, education and deep understanding of Gumel’s traditions make him qualified to occupy the traditional stool.

He added that having served as Ciroman Gumel, the new emir was already familiar with the people, as well as the challenges and aspirations of the emirate and Jigawa State.

The state government expressed confidence that the new emir would provide purposeful and exemplary leadership while building on the legacies of his late father.

Governor Namadi also urged the people of Gumel Emirate to support and cooperate with the new emir to promote peace, unity and development across the emirate.

The Secretary to the State Government prayed for the repose of the late emir and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to preserving traditional institutions as custodians of culture and unity.

Ibrahim said the governor would present the staff of office to the new Emir of Gumel at a ceremony to be held in due course.

He also called on all stakeholders to cooperate with the government to ensure that the ceremony is conducted peacefully and successfully.
