JONATHAN CONFIRMS ATTENDANCE AT OPOBO MONARCH’S SEPTEMBER CORONATION

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has confirmed that he will attend the coronation of the Amanyanabo of Opobo Kingdom, King Charles Douglas MacPepple Jaja, Jeki VI.

Jonathan disclosed his decision when he received the monarch and members of the Opobo Council of Alapu at his residence in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, as part of preparations for the upcoming coronation.

The former president described Opobo Kingdom as a historic institution with an important place in Nigeria’s history, particularly in the development of the Niger Delta.

Jonathan also congratulated King Charles Douglas MacPepple Jaja on his emergence as the new monarch and acknowledged the significance of the Opobo throne to the region.

The monarch had visited Jonathan to discuss matters of common interest in the Niger Delta and formally invite the former president to the coronation.

While accepting the invitation, Jonathan expressed appreciation for the visit and assured the monarch that he would be present to honour him at the ceremony.

The coronation of King Charles Douglas MacPepple Jaja, Jeki VI, is scheduled for Saturday, September 26, 2026, as the main event of a 10-day programme running from September 18 to 27.

The Opobo monarchy traces its history to King Jaja of Opobo, who established the kingdom as a major political and commercial centre in the 19th-century Niger Delta.

King Charles Douglas MacPepple Jaja became Amanyanabo-Elect following the death of King Dandeson Douglas Jaja and is now set to be formally crowned as the monarch of Opobo Kingdom.

The coronation is expected to attract traditional rulers, political leaders, members of the diplomatic community, business leaders and Opobo indigenes from Nigeria and abroad.

Jonathan’s confirmation of attendance adds to the list of prominent figures expected at the historic ceremony as Opobo Kingdom prepares to formally usher in its new monarch.
