Former President Goodluck Jonathan has said Nigeria’s 2027 general election will provide an important test of the country  democratic development.

Jonathan made the remarks in his 2026 Independence Day message, released on Thursday as Nigeria marked 66 years of independence.

He said the credibility of the election would depend on the commitment of political leaders, electoral institutions, security agencies and citizens to democratic principles.

The former president urged political actors to prioritise national interest and respect the rules governing the electoral process.

He also called for greater political tolerance and peaceful participation as preparations for the 2027 elections continue.

Jonathan said Nigerians had a responsibility to protect democratic values and ensure that elections reflected the choices of voters.

He stressed the importance of strengthening institutions and encouraging citizens to participate actively in the democratic process.

The former president's comments come as political parties and candidates intensify preparations for the 2027 general elections.

The Independent National Electoral Commission has also been working on preparations for the polls, amid discussions around voter participation, election technology and the need to protect the integrity of the electoral process.

Jonathan served as Nigeria’s president from 2010 to 2015 and has remained involved in election-related peace and democratic initiatives since leaving office.
