KADUNA LAUNCHES MASSIVE LIVESTOCK PROGRAMME TO EMPOWER 5,000 FARMERS
Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, says his administration’s overarching strategy is to transform the agricultural sector and strengthen the livestock value chain, positioning Kaduna as the capital of northern Nigeria in agribusiness.
Speaking through Deputy Governor Hadiza Balarebe during the flag-off of a livestock intervention programme, Gov. Sani highlighted the government’s commitment to empowering farmers and promoting sustainable agricultural growth.
As part of the initiative, the state government distributed 500 solar-powered freezers with panels, inverters, and batteries; 300 feed millers; 3,000 bags of poultry feed; and 200,000 day-old chicks to organized farmer cooperatives across Kaduna’s 23 Local Government Areas.
Gov. Sani explained that the programme will directly benefit 5,000 farmers, grouped into cooperatives of 10 members each, noting that the assets will enhance productivity, reduce post-harvest losses, improve product quality, and expand income opportunities—particularly for women and youth, who are key players in the livestock sector.
“The intervention is part of deliberate investments by our administration to strengthen agricultural value chains, expand access to modern technology, and empower farmers to increase productivity,” he said.
The governor added that Kaduna State has already achieved significant milestones in livestock development, including rehabilitating abattoirs and slaughter slabs, constructing veterinary clinics and boreholes in pastoral communities, and deploying mobile veterinary teams to ensure timely animal healthcare.
Vaccination campaigns carried out by the government have so far protected over 850,000 cattle, 250,000 sheep and goats, 250,000 poultry, and 5,000 dogs from transboundary diseases.
In addition, the administration has distributed 100 residue crushers and 50 fodder choppers to cooperatives and sedentary pastoralist groups, enabling crop residues to be converted into livestock feed and improving feed availability across the state.
