The Kano State Censorship Board has launched a new welfare programme tagged “Kannywood AbbaCare Initiative” aimed at supporting ailing and vulnerable film practitioners in Kano.

The initiative is designed to provide medical assistance, financial support, and social welfare services to members of the Kannywood film industry who are facing health or economic challenges.

Officials said the programme reflects the state government’s commitment to improving the welfare of creatives and recognising their contribution to the entertainment sector in northern Nigeria.

According to the agency, many veteran actors and production crew members have struggled with healthcare costs and lack of structured support systems, prompting the need for targeted intervention.

Industry stakeholders have welcomed the initiative, describing it as a timely step toward strengthening the welfare structure within Kannywood.

The programme is expected to partner with healthcare providers and industry associations to ensure beneficiaries receive consistent and transparent support.

The launch adds to ongoing efforts in Nigeria to formalise and support the creative industry through policy and welfare-driven initiatives.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
