KANO BUSINESS ICON AND PHILANTHROPIST AMINU DANTATA DIES AT 94
Renowned Kano industrialist and philanthropist, Alhaji Aminu Alhassan Dantata, has passed away at the age of 94.
The announcement was made on Saturday by his private secretary, Mustapha Abdullahi-Junaid, who described the death as a profound loss.
"Innalillahi wa inna ilaihi raji’un. It is with a heavy heart that I announce the passing of our beloved father, Alhaji Aminu Alhassan Dantata. May Allah grant him Jannatul Firdaus and forgive his shortcomings. Details of the Janazah will be shared later, in sha Allah," the statement read.
Dantata, a prominent figure in Nigerian business and Islamic philanthropy, was a key member of the influential Dantata family. He expanded the legacy of his father, Alhaji Alhassan Dantata — one of West Africa’s wealthiest merchants of the early 20th century — transforming the family enterprise into a multi-sector conglomerate.
Over the decades, he successfully diversified the family’s holdings into construction, manufacturing, banking, agriculture, and oil and gas, becoming one of Nigeria’s most respected businessmen.
Beyond his commercial achievements, Dantata was widely admired for his humility, deep religious devotion, and lifelong commitment to community development, particularly across Northern Nigeria.
Through both his personal philanthropy and a charitable foundation, he funded the construction and maintenance of schools, mosques, hospitals, orphanages, and other social welfare initiatives.
Dantata also served in numerous leadership roles in both public and private sectors, where he mentored generations of entrepreneurs and civic leaders.
Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family in due course.
