KANO COURT SENTENCES MAN TO DEATH FOR KILLING HIS SON
The Kano State High Court has sentenced Abubakar Alhaji Sabo to death by hanging after convicting him of murdering his newborn son.
The Kano State Government had prosecuted Sabo on charges of culpable homicide and causing grievous harm.
According to the prosecution, Sabo force-fed the infant a local insecticide called ‘fiya-fiya,’ which led to the child’s death. The act followed the mother’s refusal to comply with his demand to kill the baby, reportedly to avoid the shame of an out-of-wedlock pregnancy.
Sabo was also found guilty of assaulting the mother’s father with a brick when the man discovered him poisoning the child.
During the trial, the prosecution presented three witnesses, while Sabo testified in his own defense.
After reviewing the evidence, Justice Aisha Yau ruled that Sabo was guilty of infanticide and sentenced him to death by hanging. The court further imposed a three-year prison term for causing grievous harm.
