Tragedy in Kano: Police Arrest Four Suspects in Killing of BUK Student
The Kano State Police Command has arrested four suspects in connection with the tragic killing of Abdullahi Umar Hafizi, a 300-level Sociology student of Bayero University, Kano (BUK).
Hafizi was reportedly stabbed to death on the night of Monday, August 4, 2025, by suspected phone snatchers around Tsamiyar Kuturu in Dorayi Karama, Gwale Local Government Area of the state. The brutal attack occurred at about 11:00 p.m., leaving the university community in deep shock.
In a statement issued by the Command’s spokesperson, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, the arrests were made following a coordinated joint operation led by officers from the Department of Operations, Dorayi Babba Division, Sharada Division, Kumbotso Division, and other tactical teams.
According to the statement, the suspects were found in possession of cutlasses, a pair of scissors, and other dangerous weapons, believed to have been used during the attack.
The swift response came after the Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, issued a 24-hour ultimatum for the perpetrators to be tracked down and brought to justice.
“All arrested suspects are residents of different locations within Dorayi Karama,” Kiyawa said. “Efforts are ongoing to arrest more suspects believed to be connected to the incident.”
The Police Command extended its condolences to the bereaved family and assured the public of its continued commitment to law and order. Officers involved in the successful operation were also commended for their professionalism and quick action.
“This case is a reminder of the need for heightened vigilance, especially at night, and stronger community-police collaboration in the fight against street crimes,” the statement added.
The investigation is ongoing, and the police have promised to release more updates as new details emerge.
