KANO RECORDS 32 DIPHTHERIA CASES AS HEALTH AUTHORITIES CLARIFY DEATH REPORTS

The Kano State Centre for Disease Control has disclosed that 32 cases of diphtheria have been recorded across the state in 2026, while clarifying reports alleging that more than 50 people had died from the disease.

The clarification followed concerns raised by the Kano State House of Assembly over reports of widespread deaths linked to diphtheria, particularly in communities within Rano Local Government Area. The reports had generated concern over the possible scale of the outbreak and its impact on residents.

However, the state disease control centre said its available records showed that 32 cases had been officially recorded so far this year. The agency explained that the difference between the official figures and the higher number of deaths being reported could be connected to under-reporting, as some residents may not visit healthcare facilities or formally report suspected cases.

Diphtheria is a serious infectious disease that can spread through respiratory droplets and close contact. Health authorities have therefore continued to emphasise the importance of early detection, prompt treatment and vaccination, particularly among children and other vulnerable groups.

The Kano State Centre for Disease Control said it was working with relevant health authorities to strengthen disease surveillance and improve the detection of suspected cases across the state. The measures are aimed at ensuring that infections are identified and managed quickly while preventing further transmission.

The agency's clarification comes amid growing public concern about the reported deaths and the need for accurate information during disease outbreaks. Authorities are expected to continue monitoring communities, improving reporting mechanisms and responding to suspected cases as part of efforts to contain diphtheria in Kano State.
