KANO SETS ONE-YEAR TARGET TO REHABILITATE 10,000 PEOPLE BATTLING DRUG ABUSE

The Kano State Government has announced plans to rehabilitate about 10,000 drug users within one year as part of intensified efforts to tackle substance abuse and its impact on young people across the state.

The initiative is expected to combine rehabilitation, counselling, medical support and reintegration programmes aimed at helping people affected by drug dependence return to productive lives.

The move comes amid growing concerns over the increasing prevalence of drug abuse in Kano, particularly among young people. State authorities have described substance abuse as a major social and public health challenge because of its links to crime, violence, family breakdown and other social problems.

The state government has recently strengthened its institutional response to the problem through the establishment of a Multi-Agency Task Force on Drug Abuse. Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf said the task force would coordinate efforts involving government agencies, security organisations, community leaders and other stakeholders.

The government said its approach would not be limited to arresting people involved in drug-related offences but would also focus on prevention, treatment and rehabilitation for those struggling with substance dependence.

Under the planned rehabilitation drive, affected individuals are expected to receive professional assistance aimed at helping them overcome addiction and eventually reintegrate into their families and communities.

The state has already established separate rehabilitation centres for male and female patients and plans to strengthen the facilities as part of its wider response to the drug abuse crisis.

Authorities are also expected to intensify public enlightenment campaigns to discourage drug use and educate residents, particularly young people, about the health and social consequences of substance abuse.

The state government's strategy involves collaboration with security agencies, traditional institutions, religious leaders, civil society organisations, educational institutions and community groups.

Officials have stressed that the scale of the drug abuse problem requires a coordinated response rather than relying solely on law enforcement.

The rehabilitation programme is therefore expected to complement efforts to prevent the distribution of illicit substances and dismantle networks involved in drug trafficking.

The government believes that helping people recover from drug dependence will also contribute to reducing crime and improving public safety across Kano.

The one-year target of 10,000 people represents a major expansion of rehabilitation efforts in the state and will require significant investment in medical personnel, counselling services, rehabilitation facilities and post-treatment support.

Authorities are also expected to monitor the progress of beneficiaries after treatment to reduce the risk of relapse and help them return to normal social and economic activities.

The initiative forms part of the Kano State Government's broader campaign against drug abuse and related criminal activities, with officials urging residents to cooperate with authorities and provide credible information that can assist in tackling the menace.

The government has maintained that addressing drug abuse requires both enforcement and rehabilitation, stressing that affected individuals should be given opportunities to recover and rebuild their lives.

If successfully implemented, the programme could provide thousands of people battling substance dependence with access to structured treatment while strengthening Kano's broader response to the growing drug abuse challenge.
