Iranian authorities have announced plans to bury former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei nearly four months after his assassination in a U.S.-Israeli strike on February 28, 2026.

According to Iranian officials, Khamenei will be laid to rest at the Imam Reza shrine in Mashhad, his hometown in northeastern Iran, following funeral processions in Tehran, Qom, and Mashhad. Preparations are reportedly underway for large public ceremonies expected to draw millions of mourners.

The prolonged delay in the burial has attracted international attention. Iranian authorities previously said security concerns and logistical challenges contributed to postponing the funeral arrangements. Earlier reports indicated that even the final burial location had not been fully determined weeks after his death.

Officials now say the funeral events are expected to begin in the second half of June, with Tehran hosting a major farewell ceremony before the body is transferred to Qom and Mashhad for additional rites.

Khamenei, who led Iran for more than three decades, was killed during a period of heightened regional tensions. His death triggered a leadership transition and marked one of the most significant political developments in Iran's recent history.
