Suspected kidnappers attacked a residential community near the Quarry area of Arab Road in Kubwa, Abuja, abducting one resident and shooting another who later died in hospital.

The attack reportedly occurred between 11 p.m. on Saturday and midnight on Sunday.

According to the secretary of the community, identified as Dairo, residents were alerted by gunshots as the attackers entered the area through a nearby hill.

“We started hearing gunshots, and the house is towards the hill. The local security tried to repel them in a gun battle,” he said.

Despite efforts by vigilantes and hunters providing local security in the community, the assailants reportedly forced their way into the victims’ apartment.

“They shot him and took his younger brother away,” Dairo added.

He explained that police officers arrived shortly after the incident, but the kidnappers had already escaped with the abducted victim through the same hill route.

A resident of the community later confirmed that the injured victim died in the hospital on Sunday.

“The boy is dead; he didn’t make it,” the resident said.

Dairo described the incident as the third successful kidnapping attack recorded in the community in recent years.

He recalled that during an earlier incident around 2021 or 2022, a corps member was abducted while another resident identified as Mr Oshodi was killed.

According to him, another resident was kidnapped in May last year and later released after paying ransom.

The community secretary revealed that suspected kidnappers had attempted to attack the area again a few weeks earlier but were repelled by local security operatives.

He appealed to the government and security agencies to establish a police station or improve patrol operations around the community to prevent further attacks.

“If the government can come and set up a police station or a patrol, once criminals see the presence of security personnel around, it will scare them away,” he said.

Efforts to get comments from the Federal Capital Territory Police Command spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, were unsuccessful as of Monday.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
