Kogi State Polytechnic has terminated the appointment of lecturer Mukhtar Muhammed following allegations of sexual misconduct involving a student.
Another staff member, Funmilayo Afolabi, was also dismissed for prolonged absence, having reportedly stayed away from duty for nine months without approval.
The decisions were announced in a statement on Sunday by the institution’s Director of Public Relations and Protocol, Mrs. Uredo Omale, following the 72nd Regular Meeting of the Governing Council.
The meeting, presided over by the Council Chairman, Barrister Sani Shaibu, took place on Friday, December 19, 2025, at the polytechnic’s Council Chamber.
According to the statement, Mr. Muhammed, an Administrative Officer II, was terminated based on the recommendations of the Appointments, Promotions and Disciplinary Committee regarding the sexual misconduct allegations. Mrs. Afolabi, an Assistant Chief Executive Officer, was dismissed for abandoning her duties for nine months without authorization.
On other disciplinary matters, the council approved the demotion of Deputy Registrar Audu Mathew to the rank of Principal Assistant Registrar for negligence of duty, underscoring the polytechnic’s zero-tolerance stance on misconduct and dereliction of duty.
In addition, the council approved the promotion of 11 Principal Lecturers to Chief Lecturer, as well as the promotion of 49 academic staff and 71 non-teaching staff for the 2024 exercise, and 225 academic staff alongside 227 non-teaching staff for the 2025 exercise.
The statement emphasized that these actions are part of ongoing efforts to strengthen discipline, reward merit, and enhance service delivery within the polytechnic.
