Stakeholders in Osun State have urged relevant authorities to address emerging risks ahead of the 2026 governorship election in the state.

The call was made during a validation event organised by the Kukah Centre, where a report titled “Political, Social & Security Context Analysis & Compliance Assessment” was presented to stakeholders.

The event brought together representatives of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security agencies, political parties, civil society organisations, traditional rulers, religious leaders, media practitioners, and persons with disabilities.

Participants stressed the need for early preventive action, warning that electoral violence is often linked to unresolved political and institutional issues.

They also called for stronger collaboration among stakeholders, strict adherence to the Peace Accord framework, and improved conduct by political actors and their supporters.

Presenting the report, Research Manager at the Kukah Centre, Fatai Yusuf, said the Osun election is shaping up into a three-bloc contest, which could increase uncertainty and electoral tension.

He noted that recent political developments, including defections and realignments, are reshaping alliances ahead of the poll.

According to the report, documented incidents of violence, injuries, and kidnappings in parts of the state highlight potential flashpoints that may affect the election.

It also raised concerns over local government disputes and perceived issues around security neutrality, which could undermine public confidence in the electoral process.

The report further warned that the growing use of informal networks and digital platforms may intensify political tension and spread misinformation.

Project Manager of the Kukah Centre, Asabe Ndahi, described the Osun governorship election as a key test of Nigeria’s democratic process.

She said the election goes beyond state politics and will serve as a measure of preparedness ahead of the 2027 general elections

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
