LAGOS CLARIFIES SANITATION MODALITIES, WARNS DEFAULTERS AHEAD OF APRIL 25

The Lagos State Government has released fresh details on the reintroduced monthly environmental sanitation exercise scheduled to resume on Saturday, April 25, 2026.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, said the exercise will now hold every last Saturday of the month.

“The exercise will hold every last Saturday of the month between the hours of 6:30 am and 8:30 am.

During this period, there will be controlled movement across the state to allow residents to carry out thorough cleaning of their homes, surroundings and drainage frontages,” Wahab said.

He explained that enforcement teams would monitor compliance during and after the sanitation period.

According to him, the teams will include officials from the Ministry of Environment, Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency, Kick Against Indiscipline, Lagos Waste Management Authority, and local government sanitation inspectors.

Wahab warned that residents who fail to comply with the exercise would face penalties under the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law of 2017.

He added that LAWMA trucks would be deployed to evacuate wastes collected during the exercise.

“LAWMA intervention trucks will go around to cart away bagged wastes generated during the exercise,” he stated.

The commissioner also announced incentives aimed at encouraging participation and cleanliness across communities.

“There will be rewards for the cleanest Local Government Area, Local Council Development Area, and the cleanest street as part of efforts to encourage healthy competition and community participation,” he said.

Wahab urged Lagos residents to support the initiative and take responsibility for maintaining a cleaner environment.

“We urge all residents to take ownership of this exercise and join hands with the government in building a cleaner, safer and more sustainable Lagos,” he added.

The clarification comes after the symbolic launch of the programme along the Mushin–Agege Motor Road corridor on March 14, ahead of full implementation this month.

The state government had earlier announced the return of the sanitation exercise nearly a decade after it was suspended in November 2016 following a legal ruling against movement restrictions during the programme.

While some residents have welcomed the development as a step toward reducing flooding and indiscriminate waste disposal, others have raised concerns over possible abuse of enforcement measures and the need for sustained public awareness.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
