The Lagos State Government has commenced clearance operations at Maiyegun-Lekki Beach along the Lekki-Epe Expressway as part of efforts to reclaim waterfronts and remove illegal structures across the state.

The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed this on Monday in a post shared on his official X account.

According to him, enforcement and sanitation teams have already been deployed to the area, and the operation is currently ongoing.

“Clearance operations are currently ongoing at Maiyegun-Lekki Beach off the Lekki Epe Expressway, and I am receiving real-time updates from our enforcement and sanitation teams on the ground,” Wahab stated.

He explained that the exercise forms part of the state government’s sustained campaign to reclaim and protect beaches, waterfronts, and coastal corridors from illegal encroachments, shanties, and environmental pollution.

“This exercise is part of our sustained commitment to reclaim and protect our waterfronts, beaches, and coastal corridors from illegal encroachments, shanties, and environmental nuisances,” he added.

Wahab described the Maiyegun-Lekki corridor as a critical part of Lagos that must be protected from activities capable of degrading the environment or posing security threats.

“The Maiyegun-Lekki axis is a critical stretch, and we will not allow it to become a haven for activities that degrade our environment and threaten public safety,” he said.

The commissioner further noted that the government owed residents and future generations the responsibility of maintaining a cleaner, safer, and more organised environment across the state.

The operation comes amid ongoing environmental enforcement activities by the Lagos State Government targeted at illegal settlements, blocked drainage systems, and unauthorised structures in different parts of the city.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
