As the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) continues, the Lagos State Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Jamiu Alli-Balogun, has urged students to steer clear of examination malpractice and uphold strong moral values.

Speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Alli-Balogun stressed the importance of honesty and self-discipline throughout the examination window, which spans from April 24 to June 20. He encouraged students to remain focused and not succumb to negative peer influences.

“Government has done its part by providing learning tools and adequate academic support. The responsibility now lies with the students to approach their exams with integrity and avoid choices that could damage their future,” he remarked.

He highlighted the Eko Learners’ Support Programme as a major initiative to assist students, offering more than 320 recorded and broadcast lessons across 10 essential subjects such as English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Yoruba. This initiative aims to enhance learning beyond the traditional classroom setting.

In addition, the commissioner announced a new policy requiring school principals and vice principals to teach a minimum of six to eight lessons weekly. This move, he explained, is intended to improve leadership involvement in the teaching process and elevate academic standards across schools.

Alli-Balogun reaffirmed the commitment of the Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu-led administration to raising educational performance and ensuring students are well-prepared for major national assessments.

He further noted that all provided educational materials align with the state’s curriculum and meet the requirements of both WASSCE and the National Examination Council (NECO) exams, which begin on June 16.

The commissioner concluded by encouraging students to take advantage of available resources and remain focused on academic success without resorting to dishonest practices.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
