LAGOS CRACKS DOWN ON ENVIRONMENTAL OFFENCES: 16 JAILED FOR ILLEGAL WASTE DISPOSAL

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has secured the conviction of 16 individuals for various environmental violations, including illegal waste dumping, as the state intensifies its campaign for a cleaner and more sustainable environment.

The convictions, which include prison sentences of up to four months for repeat and serious offenders, followed coordinated enforcement operations across different parts of the state. Some convicts were also fined, with authorities warning that anyone caught dumping waste indiscriminately now faces a ₦250,000 penalty or jail time.

LAWMA officials stressed that the enforcement drive targets those who refuse to patronise approved Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators for waste collection. The agency described the action as a strong deterrent to protect public health and maintain the aesthetics of Lagos.

This latest operation aligns with the state government’s broader zero-tolerance policy on environmental infractions. Environmental experts commend the move, noting that indiscriminate waste disposal contributes to flooding, disease outbreaks, and blocked drainages during the rainy season.

Residents have been urged to comply with sanitation laws and utilise designated collection points. LAWMA vowed to sustain aggressive monitoring and prosecution, promising a cleaner Lagos through consistent enforcement and public education.

The agency continues to call for community cooperation to achieve a healthier living environment for all.
