LAGOS CRACKS DOWN ON ILLEGAL WASTE DUMPING, ARRESTS THREE ALONG IKOTUN–IGANDO ROAD

The Lagos State Government has intensified its efforts to combat environmental pollution with the recent arrest of three individuals caught illegally dumping refuse along the Ikotun–Igando Road median.

The arrests were made during an early morning operation on Monday by the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) Waste Infractions Surveillance and Investigation Team. This initiative is part of the government's ongoing strategy to eliminate persistent waste blackspots and improve sanitation along major roads.

On Tuesday, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, confirmed the arrests, stating that the suspects were apprehended while engaging in indiscriminate waste disposal. “As a result of these operations, three individuals were arrested for disposing of refuse illegally at the road median along Ikotun–Igando Road,” Wahab said.

He added that the suspects Muosolu Ogochukwu, 35; Adedigba Kazeem, 35; and Isaac Monday, 24, have been handed over to the LAWMA legal team and transferred to the Oshodi Mobile Court for prosecution under existing environmental laws.

Wahab reiterated the state government’s zero tolerance for environmental offenses, emphasizing that illegal dumping not only degrades the environment but also contributes to flooding, health risks, and poor living conditions for residents. “Lagos is determined to remain a clean, healthy, and livable city. We will continue to enforce environmental laws and hold offenders accountable, regardless of who they are,” he warned.

The commissioner also urged residents to practice proper waste disposal and utilize approved waste collection services, noting that maintaining a clean city is a shared responsibility.

These latest arrests are part of a broader crackdown on environmental violations across the state. In recent weeks, the government has increased enforcement actions, including pursuing suspects who assaulted environmental officers during official duties.

Last week, the Lagos State Government launched a manhunt for individuals who allegedly attacked four officials of the State Environmental Sanitation Corps during an enforcement operation at a restaurant in Victoria Island. The facility was subsequently sealed, and its supervisor was arrested after officials discovered the illegal discharge of untreated wastewater, fats, and oils into the environment.

The state government emphasizes that these actions reflect its renewed commitment to environmental protection and public health, warning that offenders should expect no leniency as enforcement continues across Lagos.
