The Lagos State Government has announced a temporary traffic diversion across key parts of the city to accommodate the Lagos Gran Fondo “Eko 170” Cycling Race, scheduled to hold on Sunday, January 11, between 5:00 am and 2:00 pm.

The disclosure was made by the Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Mr Oluwaseun Osiyemi, in a statement released on Saturday in Lagos.

According to Osiyemi, the cycling event, organised by Dynastar Sport and Education Foundation, is a 170-kilometre mass participation race aimed at promoting sports tourism, healthy living, and sustainable transportation in the state. The competition will feature two different routes a 70-kilometre route and the main 170-kilometre route, both starting and ending at Eko Atlantic.

He explained that the 70km route will begin at Eko Atlantic, pass through Ahmadu Bello Way, Coastal Road, Okun-Ajah Community Road, Ogombo Road, Abraham Adesanya Junction, Lekki-Epe Expressway, Sangotedo, and return to Eko Atlantic as the finishing point.

For the longer 170km route, Osiyemi said cyclists would move from Eko Atlantic through Ahmadu Bello Way, Coastal Road, Okun-Ajah Community Road, Ogombo Road, Abraham Adesanya Junction, Lekki-Epe Expressway, Sangotedo, Epe T-Junction, Ita Marun Junction, Poka-Araga Road, Oke Osho Junction, Temu Road, before returning through Epe T-Junction back to Eko Atlantic.

To ensure smooth traffic flow and safety during the event, the commissioner noted that all adjoining roads, junctions, and intersections along the race routes would be closely monitored and regulated.

“For traffic management, all adjoining roads, junctions, and intersections on the race routes will be regulated by officers of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, in collaboration with other security agencies, to prevent unauthorised access and ensure orderliness,” Osiyemi said.

He added that the affected roads would remain partially open to vehicular movement, urging motorists to be patient, cooperate with traffic officials on duty, and strictly adhere to all traffic instructions throughout the duration of the race.

“These measures are necessary to ensure the safety of both the cyclists and other road users during the event,” he said.

Osiyemi also advised residents to plan their journeys ahead of time and, where possible, use alternative routes to avoid inconvenience during the hours of the race.

The Lagos Gran Fondo “Eko 170” Cycling Race is one of the state’s flagship sporting events, designed to showcase Lagos as a hub for international sporting activities. According to the state government, the event will highlight the city’s modern infrastructure, scenic coastal environment, and vibrant cultural identity, while encouraging fitness, environmental sustainability, and global tourism interest in Lagos.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
